Acyclovir eye drops

Acyclovir (AZV) is effective against herpes simplex virus (HSV) type I and II, and secondarily against varicella-zoster virus (AZV), but has a weaker effect on Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus. Acyclovir is effective against herpes simplex virus type I and II and varicella-zoster virus because AZV can be phosphorylated by virus-encoded thymidine kinase (TK) into acyclovir monophosphate, which is then catalyzed by cellular enzymes to form acyclovir diphosphate and triphosphate. Acyclovir triphosphate is a strong inhibitor of herpes simplex virus DNA polymerase. It binds to the enzyme as a substrate of viral DNA polymerase and is incorporated into viral DNA, thereby terminating the synthesis of viral DNA.

This product is a colorless clear liquid.

Antiviral drug. Used for herpes simplex keratitis.

Place drops into eyelids every 2 hours.

Eye drops may cause mild pain and burning sensation, but are well tolerated by patients.
