Brimonidine tartrate eye drops

Function and Efficacy

This drug is a relatively selective α2 adrenergic receptor agonist for ophthalmic use. It has little effect on cardiovascular and pulmonary function. The intraocular pressure lowering effect reaches its peak two hours after administration. Studies using fluorescence spectrophotometry in animals and humans have shown that brimonidine tartrate has a dual mechanism of action; it reduces the production of aqueous humor and increases the outflow of the uveosclera.

Drug Interactions

Although no specific studies have been conducted on drug interactions of this product, the possibility of additive or potentiating effects with central nervous system depressants (alcohol, barbiturates, opiates, sedatives or anesthetics) should be considered. Clinical studies have not found that this product has a significant effect on pulse or blood pressure, but since α-receptor agonists can also slow the pulse or increase blood pressure, attention should also be paid to the use of antidepressants and/or cardiotonic drugs. Literature reports that tricyclic antidepressants weaken the antihypertensive effect of systemic clonidine. Whether the simultaneous use of such drugs will interfere with the hypotensive effect of this product is not yet clear. There is no data on whether the use of this product will affect the high level of circulating catecholamines. However, when patients take tricyclic antidepressants that can affect the metabolism or uptake of circulating amines,
