Sodium Nitrite Injection
Function and Efficacy
Cyanide has a high affinity with the trivalent iron (Fe3) of cytochrome oxidase. After binding, the enzyme loses its activity, inhibits cell respiration, and leads to cell lactic acidosis and hypoxia. This product is an oxidant that can oxidize the divalent iron (Fe2) in hemoglobin into trivalent iron (Fe3+) to form methemoglobin. The binding force between Fe2+ in methemoglobin and cyanide (CN-) is stronger than that of Fe3+ in cytochrome oxidase. Even CN- that has been bound to cytochrome oxidase can be released again to restore the activity of the enzyme. However, the cyanide methemoglobin formed after methemoglobin binds to CN- gradually dissociates after a few minutes, releasing CN- and reappearing cyanide toxicity. Therefore, this product only temporarily delays the toxicity of cyanide poisoning. This product also has the effect of dilating blood vessels.
