Imiquimod cream

Function and Efficacy

1 Pharmacodynamics Imiquimod belongs to the class of imidazoquinoline compounds. It is a small molecule immunomodulator. Its mechanism of action in the treatment of external genital/perianal warts is still unclear. This product does not have direct antiviral activity, nor does it cause direct, non-specific cytolytic destruction. However, preclinical studies suggest that this product may produce antiviral activity by inducing cytokines in the body, including INF-α. The clinical relevance of these findings is still unclear. 2 Toxicology Rats and mice were administered skin administration 3 times a week for 4 months. Rats at 0.5 and 2.5 mg/kg showed weight loss and increased spleen weight. Local skin irritation (severe erythema, mild to moderate edema, peeling, and crusting) was more severe than that observed in humans.
