Adverse Reactions
Occasionally, there may be vulvar itching or mild weight gain. Oral preparations have had the following adverse reactions: androgen-like effects, including weight gain, acne, seborrhea, mild hirsutism, edema, and hair loss. Voice changes, such as hoarseness, instability, and low pitch, which may persist after discontinuation of the drug, and rare clitoral hyperplasia. Other possible endocrine effects include changes in the menstrual cycle and amenorrhea. Cyclic bleeding and ovulation can resume 60 to 90 days after discontinuation of the drug, but persistent amenorrhea is occasionally reported. Hot flushes, sweating, vaginal dryness, irritation, and breast reduction reflect a decrease in estrogen. Mental and emotional disturbances have been reported. There have been reports of elevated serum transaminases or jaundiced liver damage at doses of 400 mg or more per day, so laboratory tests and clinical observations are required during oral treatment to monitor the patient's liver function.
