Metronidazole gargle

Metronidazole has a strong antibacterial effect on most anaerobic bacteria, but has no effect on aerobic bacteria and facultative anaerobes. The antibacterial spectrum includes Bacteroides fragilis and other Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Clostridium perfringens, Eubacterium, Veillonella, Peptococcus and Peptostreptococcus, etc. Its bactericidal concentration is slightly higher than the inhibitory concentration. The bactericidal mechanism of metronidazole has not been fully elucidated. The nitroreductase of anaerobic bacteria plays an important role in the energy metabolism of sensitive strains. The nitro group of this product is reduced to a cytotoxin, which acts on the DNA metabolism process of bacteria and promotes cell death.

Its chemical name is 2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole-1-ethanol. Its chemical structure is: Molecular formula: C6H9N3O3 Molecular weight: 171.16

Light yellow or yellow clear liquid. Aromatic, sweet, slightly spicy, with a refreshing aftertaste; after adding water and shaking, there is persistent foam.

Used as an auxiliary treatment for oral inflammation such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gargle. Take 10-20ml at a time, hold it in your mouth for 30 seconds before gargling, 3-4 times a day, one week is a course of treatment.

Occasionally, taste changes and slight tingling of the oral mucosa, nausea, vomiting, etc. may disappear after stopping the drug. Because this product can be absorbed from the mucosa, long-term and large-scale use may produce the same adverse reactions as systemic medication, such as: reversible neutropenia; central nervous system symptoms such as headache, dizziness, epileptic seizures and peripheral neuropathy, as well as fever, vaginal candidal infection, cystitis, dark urine color and other reactions.

It is contraindicated for patients who are allergic to this product or azole drugs and those with active central nervous system diseases and blood diseases.

Precautions for children: Children should use with caution. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: Animal experiments have found that metronidazole is toxic to the fetus after intraperitoneal administration. However, there is currently a lack of sufficient and rigorous controlled studies on pregnant and lactating women. Therefore, pregnant women are prohibited from using this product, and lactating women should suspend breastfeeding when using this product. Precautions for the elderly: Due to decreased liver function in the elderly, the pharmacokinetics of this product are changed when using it, so it should be used with caution.

After large-scale use of this product, it is absorbed through the mucosa and may also produce drug interactions similar to those of systemic medications, such as inhibiting the metabolism of warfarin and other oral anticoagulants, interfering with disulfiram metabolism and serum aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase assay results. When used in combination with liver microsomal enzyme inducers or inhibitors, it may accelerate or slow down the metabolism of this product in the liver.
