Baclofen Tablets
Function and Efficacy
The product is an antispasmodic drug, a derivative of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a skeletal muscle relaxant and sedative acting on the spinal cord. The drug inhibits the release of excitatory amino acids such as glutamate and aspartate by stimulating GABAβ-receptors, thereby inhibiting the transmission of monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes in the spinal cord and exerting an antispasmodic effect.
Ingredients
The main ingredient of this product is baclofen, and its chemical name is 4-amino-3-(4-chlorophenyl)-butyric acid.

Indication
Limited to muscle spasms caused by spinal cord and brain disease or injury.
Usage and Dosage
The initial dose is 1/2 tablet (5 mg) 3 times a day, and 1/2 tablet (5 mg) is added every 3 days until the most ideal effect is achieved. The dose can be increased later; but the maximum daily dose should not exceed 80 mg (20 mg, 4 times a day), or follow the doctor's advice. When it is necessary to stop using, the dose should be gradually reduced to avoid side effects.
Adverse Reactions
1. Central nervous system: At the beginning of treatment, side effects such as daytime sedation, drowsiness and nausea often occur, and dry mouth, respiratory depression, dizziness, weakness, mental confusion, vertigo, vomiting, headache and insomnia occasionally occur. 2. Neuropsychiatric manifestations occasionally or rarely reported include: euphoria, depression, paresthesia, myalgia, muscle weakness, ataxia, tremor, nystagmus, accommodation disorders, hallucinations, nightmares. The above symptoms are often difficult to distinguish from the manifestations of the disease itself. It may lower the seizure threshold and cause seizures. Patients with epilepsy should pay special attention. 3. Gastrointestinal tract: Occasionally mild gastrointestinal dysfunction (constipation, diarrhea). 4. Cardiovascular system: Occasionally hypotension and decreased heart function occur. 5. Urogenital system: Occasionally or rarely dysuria, frequent urination, and enuresis. These are often difficult to distinguish from the manifestations of the disease itself. 6. Other side effects: Rare or individual cases have visual impairment, taste disorders, hyperhidrosis, rash, and liver damage. Some patients may have a paradoxical reaction to the drug with worsening spasticity. Hypotonia may occur, making it more difficult for patients to walk or care for themselves, which usually improves after adjusting the dose (e.g., reducing the daytime dose and, if possible, increasing the nighttime dose).
Precautions
1. People who are allergic to this product. 2. Patients with epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and skeletal muscle spasms caused by rheumatic diseases.
Special Population Medication
Precautions for children: This product should not be used by children under 12 years old, as its safety has not yet been established. Because it may induce seizures in patients with epilepsy or a history of epilepsy, care should be taken when giving this product to children. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: It is contraindicated in the first three months of pregnancy. Use with caution in lactating women. Precautions for the elderly: The physiological functions of the elderly decline, and low doses can cause symptoms such as low muscle strength and fatigue, so symptoms should be observed at the beginning and the drug should be administered at a low dose.
Drug Interactions
1. Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants can increase the central inhibitory effect of this drug. When this product is used in combination with other drugs that act on the central nervous system or alcohol, it can increase the sedative effect. 2. When used in combination with tricyclic antidepressants, it can enhance the effect of baclofen and cause obvious hypotonia. 3. The combination of baclofen and antihypertensive drugs can enhance the blood pressure lowering effect, so the dose of antihypertensive drugs should be adjusted appropriately. 4. Patients with Parkinson's disease (tremor paralysis) who receive baclofen and levodopa plus carbidopa at the same time have been reported to experience mental confusion, hallucinations and agitation.
