Dexamethasone implant

Function and Efficacy

Dexamethasone is a synthetic adrenal cortex hormone, which is generally believed to have a strong anti-inflammatory effect on inflammation caused by various reasons (physical, chemical, biological, immune, etc.). For example, it can reduce the exudation, edema, capillary dilation, leukocyte infiltration and phagocytic reaction in the early stage of inflammation, thereby improving symptoms such as redness, swelling and pain; in the late stage of inflammation, it can inhibit the proliferation of capillaries and fibroblasts, delay the formation of granulation tissue, prevent adhesion and scar formation, and reduce sequelae.

Ingredients

The main ingredient of this product is dexamethasone, whose chemical name is: 16alpha-methyl-11beta, 17alpha, 21-trihydroxy-9alpha-fluoropregnant-1,4-diene-3,20-dione.

Appearance

This product is white or off-white columnar particles.

Indication

It is suitable for postoperative intraocular inflammation caused by cataract removal and implantation of artificial lens.

Usage and Dosage

After implanting the intraocular lens and removing the viscoelastic, use toothless forceps to take one pill of this product from the package and place it in the anterior chamber or posterior chamber. If placed in the anterior chamber, the medicine should be placed at the 12 o'clock position of the iris base; if placed in the posterior chamber, it should be placed at the 6 o'clock position between the iris and the front surface of the intraocular lens, and then the incision is closed in the usual way. This product must be sterile before and during use. Unless the product is used immediately, the tin foil package should not be opened at any other time.

Adverse Reactions

In clinical trials, no systemic adverse reactions or local irritation directly related to the implantation of this product were found. This product generally does not cause increased intraocular pressure; due to individual differences, increased intraocular pressure may occur occasionally, but it is reversible and can return to normal after medication.

Precautions

1. Patients with herpes simplex keratitis, chickenpox and other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva. 2. Patients with mycobacterial infection. 3. Patients with fungal diseases of ocular tissue. 4. Patients with glaucoma or patients with a family history of glaucoma. 5. Patients with a history of allergy to adrenocortical hormones.

Special Population Medication

Precautions for children: There are no safety and efficacy trials for pediatric patients. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: (1) Pregnant women: Tests on mice and rats have shown that high-dose dexamethasone has teratogenic effects. Currently, there are not enough tests for this product for pregnant women. It should only be used with caution if the potential benefits of this product to pregnant women outweigh its harm to the embryo and fetus. Infants born to mothers who use large amounts of hormones during pregnancy should be closely monitored for signs of adrenal insufficiency. (2) Breastfeeders: Topical hormones are absorbed systemically. Because adverse reactions may occur during breastfeeding, it is recommended to either stop breastfeeding or cancel the medication based on clinical considerations. Precautions for the elderly: Not yet clear.
