Function and Efficacy
Potassium chloride is an electrolyte supplement. Potassium is the main cation in cells, with an intracellular concentration of about 150-160 mmol/L and a lower concentration of 3.5-5.0 mmol/L in extracellular fluid. The body mainly relies on Na, K and ATPase on the cell membrane to maintain the difference in K and Na+ concentrations inside and outside the cell. The acid-base balance in the body affects potassium metabolism. For example, when acidosis occurs, H+ enters the cell. In order to maintain the potential difference inside and outside the cell, K+ is released outside the cell, causing or aggravating hyperkalemia. Appearance
This product is white tablet or sugar-coated tablet.
Indication
1. Treatment of hypokalemia caused by various reasons, such as insufficient food intake, vomiting, severe diarrhea, the use of potassium-excreting diuretics, hypokalemic familial periodic paralysis, long-term use of glucocorticoids and supplementation of hypertonic glucose, etc. 2. Prevention of hypokalemia When patients have potassium loss, especially if hypokalemia is harmful to patients (such as patients using digitalis drugs), preventive potassium salt supplementation is required.
Usage and Dosage
Oral potassium salts are used to treat mild hypokalemia or for preventive treatment. The usual dose for adults is 0.5 to 1 g (6.7 to 13.4 mmol) each time, 2 to 4 times a day, after meals, and the dose is adjusted according to the condition. The maximum daily dose for adults is 6 g (80 mmol).
Adverse Reactions
1 Oral administration may cause gastrointestinal irritation symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, throat discomfort, chest pain (esophageal irritation), abdominal pain, diarrhea, and even peptic ulcer and bleeding. It is more likely to occur on an empty stomach, in large doses, or in patients with existing gastrointestinal diseases. 2 Hyperkalemia should be noted in patients with existing renal impairment.
Precautions
1. Patients with hyperkalemia. 2. Patients with acute renal insufficiency or chronic renal insufficiency.
Special Population Medication
Precautions for children: Not yet clear. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: Not yet clear. Precautions for the elderly: The kidneys of the elderly have reduced K+ clearance function, and hyperkalemia is more likely to occur when potassium salts are used.
Drug Interactions
1. Adrenal glucocorticoids, especially those with more obvious mineralocorticoid effects, adrenal mineralocorticoids and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), can promote urinary potassium excretion, and reduce the efficacy of potassium salts when used together. 2. Anticholinergic drugs can aggravate the gastrointestinal irritation of oral potassium salts, especially potassium chloride. 3. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesics aggravate the gastrointestinal reactions of oral potassium salts. 4. When using stored blood (30mmol/L of potassium for less than 10 days of storage, 65mmol/L of potassium for more than 10 days of storage), potassium-containing drugs and potassium-sparing diuretics together, the chance of hyperkalemia increases, especially in patients with renal damage. 5. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and cyclosporine A can inhibit aldosterone secretion and reduce urinary potassium excretion, so hyperkalemia is prone to occur when used together. 6. Heparin can inhibit the synthesis of aldosterone and reduce urinary potassium excretion, so hyperkalemia is prone to occur when used together. In addition, heparin can increase the chance of gastrointestinal bleeding. 7. Sustained-release potassium salts can inhibit the intestinal absorption of vitamin B12.
