Atenolol Tablets

Function and Efficacy

It is a selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker with no membrane stabilizing effect and endogenous sympathomimetic activity. However, it does not inhibit the bronchodilator effect of isoproterenol. Its mechanism of lowering blood pressure and reducing myocardial oxygen consumption is the same as that of propranolol. Large-scale clinical trials have confirmed that atenolol can reduce the mortality rate of acute myocardial infarction within 0 to 7 days. The therapeutic dose has no significant inhibition on myocardial contractility.

Ingredients

The main chemical component is Atenol: 4-[3-[(1-methylethyl)amino-2-hydroxy]propoxy]phenylacetamide

Appearance

This medicine is a biconvex film tablet.

Indication

It is used to treat hypertension, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and can also be used for arrhythmia, hyperthyroidism, and pheochromocytoma.

Usage and Dosage

Common oral dosage for adults: 6.25~12.5mg each time, twice a day, gradually increase to 50~200mg as needed and tolerated. In case of renal impairment, 25mg per day for patients with creatinine clearance less than 15ml/(min.1.73m2); 50mg per day for patients with 15~35ml/(min.1.73m2).

Adverse Reactions

In patients with myocardial infarction, the most common adverse reactions are hypotension and bradycardia; other reactions may include dizziness, cold limbs, fatigue, weakness, gastrointestinal discomfort, depression, hair loss, thrombocytopenia, psoriasis-like skin reactions, psoriasis exacerbation, rash and dry eyes, etc. Rarely, it may cause heart block in sensitive patients.

Precautions

Special Population Medication

Precautions for children: Children should start with a small dose of 0.25~0.5mg/kg, twice a day. Pay attention to monitoring heart rate and blood pressure. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: This product can pass the placental barrier and appear in the umbilical cord blood. There is a lack of research on the use of this drug in the first 3 months, and the possibility of fetal damage cannot be ruled out. Long-term use of this drug by pregnant women is related to intrauterine growth retardation of the fetus. This drug has a significant aggregation effect in breast milk, and lactating women should be cautious when taking it. Precautions for the elderly: The required dose can be reduced, especially for patients with renal decline.

Drug Interactions

When used in combination with other antihypertensive drugs and diuretics, their antihypertensive effect can be enhanced. Be especially cautious when using Class I antiarrhythmic drugs, verapamil, and anesthetics. Beta-blockers can aggravate the rebound of hypertension caused by discontinuation of clonidine. If the two drugs are used in combination, this drug should be discontinued a few days before discontinuation of clonidine. If this drug is used to replace clonidine, the course of beta-blocker treatment should be started a few days after stopping taking clonidine.
