  • Description

Activated carbon is a carbon material with a large specific surface area and strong adsorption and decolorization capabilities. In the 19th century, people used it to decolorize, deodorize, and purify sugar, wine, and water. Bone charcoal has been used in water filtration for more than 100 years. Activated carbon was used to make gas masks during the First World War. By the 1990s, it was widely used in wastewater treatment, organic solvent concentration and recovery, air purification and other environmental protection, gold extraction and other fields.

The carbon material remaining after carbonization of organic matter at 600-700°C has the ability to be activated or activated. However, these carbon materials firmly adsorb some gaseous hydrocarbons and other substances, reducing their activation ability requires raising the carbonization temperature to above the critical temperature for forming activated carbon. In order to decompose and desorb these adsorbed gaseous substances. Then use steam, carbon dioxide and other activation to improve the activation ability to reach the industrial application level. The adsorption of activated carbon is due to the rich micropores inside, that is, a large specific surface area. Therefore, the key to making activated carbon is to use organic matter to generate as many micropores as possible during the carbonization and activation process.

Activated carbon can be divided into powdered activated carbon, granular activated carbon and fibrous activated carbon according to its shape. The raw materials of activated carbon are: (1) Plants: wood, sawdust, fruit shells (including coconut shells, hawthorn kernels, rice husks, etc.), cellulose, lignin and pulp residues. (2) Animals: bones of various animals. (3) Minerals: lignite, peat, anthracite, and petroleum residues. (4) Chemicals: Polyacrylonitrile, viscose, phenolic and other fibers. What these raw materials have in common is that solid-phase carbonization occurs during the heat treatment.
