Description
Potassium hydroxide is a common inorganic base with a chemical formula of KOH and a molecular weight of 56.1. White powder or flake solid, melting point 380 ℃, boiling point 1324 ℃, relative density 2.04 g / cm3, refractive index n20 / D 1.421, vapor pressure 1mmHg (719 ℃). Its properties are similar to sodium hydroxide, with strong alkalinity and corrosivity, and the pH of 0.1 mol / L solution is 13.5. It is easy to absorb moisture in the air and deliquesce, and absorb carbon dioxide to form potassium carbonate. Soluble in about 0.6 parts of hot water, 0.9 parts of cold water, 3 parts of ethanol, 2.5 parts of glycerin, slightly soluble in ether. When dissolved in water, alcohol or treated with acid generates a lot of heat.

Reactivity Profile:POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE, SOLUTION is a strong base dissolved in water. Reacts exothermically with all acids. Slowly dissolves glass. Attacks aluminum and zinc to generate flammable hydrogen gas. Ignited a polyethylene container liner when mixed with potassium persulfate by release of heat and oxygen [MCA Case History 1155. 1955].
