According to the type of binders in coatings, water-based coatings are divided into two categories: natural water-based coatings of natural substances or minerals (such as potassium silicate) and petrochemical water-based coatings of synthetic resins (such as acrylic resins). Only the water-based paints of synthetic resins are explained here.

Water-soluble paints use water-soluble resins as film-forming materials, represented by polyvinyl alcohol and various modified products.
