It is a crystalline powder or a powder with blue-purple shiny crystal. Its solid state is stable, while easily deactivated in acidic and alkaline solution. Few other antibiotics have been discovered that work via this alkylating mechanism, making mitomycin relatively unique in the space of microbiota-derived therapies.
