Bacitracin is a mixture of related cyclic polypeptides. These peptides disrupt both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria by interfering with the cell walls and peptidoglycan synthesis.
Bacitracin is used as a topical preparation (since it is toxic and has poor oral bioavailability). In terms of adverse reactions only, in comparison with bacitracin, white petrolatum possesses an equally low infection rate and minimal risk for induction of allergy.
1. Bacitracin is very effective for gram-positive bacteria, and it is also effective for some gram-negative bacteria.
2. Bacitracin can promote the growth of livestock and poultry.
3. Bacitracin is suitable for treating carbuncles, abscesses, acne, suppurative dermatoses, aromatic dysentery, gonococcus, and meningococcal infections. It is very toxic to the kidneys.
4. Bacitracin is mainly used as an animal growth promoter in feed.
5. Bacitracin is a polypeptide antibiotic produced by lichen bacillus.
