Maribavir (1263W94), which completed phase II trials but failed to achieve study goals in a phase III trial in 2009, is a benzimidazole compound with in vitro activity against CMV. It does not require intracellular activation and has demonstrated activity against clinical isolates resistant to ganciclovir or foscarnet.
