Description

Maribavir is a potent inhibitor of histone phosphorylation catalyzed by wild-type pUL97 in vitro, with an IC50 of 3 nM. Maribavir has potent antiviral activity against HCMV and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).

Maribavir is an orally available benzimidazole riboside compound with activity against cytomegalovirus (CMV). Maribavir is a selective ATP competitor of viral UL97 kinase, which is involved in viral nuclear maturation events, such as viral DNA assembly and movement of viral capsids from the nucleus of infected cells. Maribavir has activity against strains of CMV that are resistant to standard anti-CMV agents.

Drug Information

Investigated for use/treatment in viral infection, transplantation (organ or tissue), cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, and retinal disorders (unspecified).|Cytomegaloviral disease|Treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection

Agents used in the prophylaxis or therapy of VIRUS DISEASES. Some of the ways they may act include preventing viral replication by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase; binding to specific cell-surface receptors and inhibiting viral penetration or uncoating; inhibiting viral protein synthesis; or blocking late stages of virus assembly. (See all compounds classified as Antiviral Agents.)

Maribavir is part of a new class of anti-cytomegalovirus (CMV) , benzimidazole ribosides, that inhibit viral DNA assembly and inhibits egress of viral capsids from the nucleus of infected cells. Maribavir is active in vitro against strains of CMV that are resistant to commonly used anti-CMV drugs. [ViroPharma] Maribavir inhibits the human CMV UL97 viral protein kinase which prevents the virus from encapsulating and leaving infected cells.
