Experimental Properties:Dipole moment: 0.97|Trichlorosilane is ordinarily a source for silicon deposition at > 1150 °C.|Organosilanes containing one or more Si--H bonds have excellent reducing capabilities. /Organosilanes/|The polarity of the Si--H bond is opposite to that of the C--H bond. This difference in polarity imparts hydride character to the Si--H bonds of organosilanes. This difference in electronegativities is not as great as in ionic hydrides, and the Si--H bond is still largely (98%) covalent. /Organosilanes/|For more Other Experimental Properties (Complete) data for TRICHLOROSILANE (7 total), please visit the HSDB record page.
Air and Water Reactions:Highly flammable. Ignites spontaneously in air [NFPA, 1991]. Reacts violently with water, steam, moisture in air to generate heat and flammable (H2) and corrosive (HCl) gases. [Handling Chemicals Safely 1980. p. 924]. Based on a scenario where the chemical is spilled into an excess of water (at least 5 fold excess of water), half of the maximum theoretical yield of Hydrogen Chloride gas will be created in 0.03 minutes. Experimental details are in the following: "Development of the Table of Initial Isolation and Protective Distances for the 2008 Emergency Response Guidebook", ANL/DIS-09-2, D.F. Brown, H.M. Hartmann, W.A. Freeman, and W.D. Haney, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Illinois, June 2009.
Reactive Group:Chlorosilanes
Reactivity Alerts:Highly Flammable
Reactivity Profile:TRICHLOROSILANE reacts with alcohols, acetone, light metals with generation of heat and combustible (H2) and corrosive (HCl) gases [Handling Chemicals Safely 1980. p. 924].
Autoignition Temperature:220 °F (USCG, 1999)|360 °F (182 °C)|185 °C
Flammable Limits:Lower flammable limit: 1.2% by volume; Upper flammable limit: 90.5% by volume|1.2%-90.5% IN AIR
Physical Dangers:The vapour is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.
Corrosivity:Corrodes metal after reacting with moisture to form hydrochloric acid
Heat of Vaporization:85 BTU/lb= 47 Cal/g= 2.0X10+5 J/kg
