Tantalum is the world's third refractory metal, its melting point is only lower than tungsten, molybdenum, as high as 2980 ℃, pure tantalum slightly blue color, excellent plasticity, in the cold state without intermediate annealing can be rolled into very thin plate (thickness can be less than 0.01 mm).The ability of tantalum to emit electrons is weak, because the electron escape power of tantalum is lower than that of refractory metals such as tungsten and molybdenum, and tantalum has been widely used in vacuum technology.

Reacts with fluorine, chlorine, and oxygen only on heating. At high temperatures absorbs several hundred times its volume of hydrogen; combines with nitrogen, with carbon.|For more Other Experimental Properties (Complete) data for TANTALUM (11 total), please visit the HSDB record page.

    Air and Water Reactions:

Metal, Combustible Solid; powder ignites SPONTANEOUSLY in air. Highly flammable in Air (powdered form) No rapid reaction with water

    Reactive Group:

    Metals, Elemental and Powder, Active

    Reactivity Alerts:

    Strong Reducing Agent

    Reactivity Profile:

TANTALUM dust reacts rapidly with oxidizing agents (oxygen, fluorine, chlorine). Highly flammable in air, igniting spontaneously when dry. (Lewis, 3rd Ed, 1993). Dissolves in molten bases (such as sodium hydroxide). Insoluble in aqueous bases. Insoluble in acids except hydrofluoric acid and fuming sulfuric acid. Tantalum in bulk form (bar, sheet, etc.) is much less reactive than it is in powdered form. TANTALUM OXIDE dust is generally unreactive at room conditions. Insoluble in water and acids with the exception of hydrofluoric acid. Reacts when strongly heated with sodium carbonate.

    Flammable Limits:

Metal: Combustible Solid; powder ignites SPONTANEOUSLY in air.

    Physical Dangers:

Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air.

    Heat of Vaporization:

    7.53X10+5 J/mol
