Description

Polydimethylsiloxane, also known as PDMS or dimethicone, is a silicone-based polymer with a repeating unit of dimethylsiloxane. It is a colorless, odorless, and non-toxic liquid or gel-like substance with excellent thermal stability, electrical insulating properties, and water repellency.

Due to its unique properties, Polydimethylsiloxane finds wide applications in various industries like personal care, pharmaceuticals, food industry, electronics, sealants and adhesives, etc.

Polydimethylsiloxane's versatility and unique properties make it a valuable material in numerous industries, contributing to the development of innovative products and applications.

Features

❶ Little change in physical properties over a wide temperature span - arelatively flat viscosity-temperature slope, and serviceability from -50°C up to 200°C.

❷ Excellent water repellency.

❸ Good dielectric properties over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies.

❹ Low surface tension - readily wets clean surfaces to impart water repellency and release characteristics.

❺ Viscosities above 10 mm²/s also exhibit heat stability, oxidation resistance, very low vapour pressures, and high flash point.

❻ Low order of toxicity

❼ Essentially odourless

❽ Soluble in a wide range of solvent

❾ Non-greasy and non-rancidifying

Applications

In the daily chemical industry, it is used in various cosmetic formulations such as skincare creams, body wash, and shampoos, providing excellent softening effects and a silky-smooth feel.

Industries like rubber, plastics, latex, polyurethane, and light industry use it as a mold release agent, isolating agent, and brightening agent in the production of certain rubber, plastic, latex, polyurethane products, and handicrafts.

In the mechanical, automotive, instrumentation, electronics, and other industries, it is used as a high-grade lubricant, liquid spring, cutting fluid, buffer oil, transformer oil, high and low-temperature brake fluid, brake fluid, instrument shock-absorbing oil, and frame molding release agent, etc.

In the textile and apparel industry, it serves as a softener, water repellent agent, hand feel improver, lubricant for sewing thread, lubricant for chemical fiber spinning boards, and auxiliary for clothing pressing.

In the leather and leather chemical industry, when combined with other additives, it can be used as a softener, water repellent agent, hand feel agent, defoaming agent, and brightener, etc.

In the pharmaceutical, food, chemical, coatings, and building materials industries, it is used as a defoaming agent, lubricant, weather-resistant coating, etc.

It is also used for other specific purposes or copolymerized with other materials to produce new materials.
