      Product Detail

Dichlorine heptaoxide is the most stable oxide of chlorine and is the anhydride of perchloric acid (HClO4). However, it will explode when exposed to pressure or fire (heated to above 393K). Slowly hydrolyzes in water to form perchloric acid. Reacts explosively with iodine. It does not react with phosphorus, sulfur, wood and paper at low temperatures.

    Items Specifications

    ECHEMI Editorial Reference
Chlorine oxide, light yellow oily liquid (Cl₂O₇), the molecule has a symmetrical double pyramid structure. It is extremely unstable and easily decomposes explosively when impacted or heated.
colorless, very volatile, oily liquid; explodes violently upon concussion or when in contact with iodine or a flame; preparation: dehydration of HClO4 with phosphorus pentoxide; uses: catalyst [KIR78] [MER06]
Cl2O7 is also known as dichlorine heptoxide. It is obtained as a colorless oily liquid by dehydration of perchloric acid using a strong dehydrating agent such as phosphorus pentoxide, P2O5.
An explosive sensitive to impact or rapid heating. Explodes on contact with iodine. Mixtures with bromine pentafluoride are shock-sensitive explosives. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Clí. See also PERCHLORATES
