Physical and chemical properties	One hydrate is pearl-colored leaf-like or flake-like crystals (dilute ethanol). 70~80 ℃ becomes anhydrous, and the melting point is 148.5 ℃. The sublimation is oblique, crystalline, melting point 233 ℃(66.7Pa), boiling point 360 ℃(101.3kPa)(micro decomposition). Density 1.03g/cm3 (monohydrate),1.052g/cm3 (anhydrous 19 ℃). Optical rotation -31.5 (c = 2, ether),-39.5 (c = 2, chloroform). Almost insoluble in water (about 0.2mg/100 mlH2O), slightly soluble in ethanol (20 ℃)[1.29% (mass)], soluble in hot ethanol, 1g soluble in 2.8ml ether, 4.5ml chloroform, 1.5ml pyridine, soluble in benzene. It exists in the tissues of all higher animals, especially the brain, spinal cord, spleen, liver, gallbladder and animal fat and oil, and is the main component of gallstone. It can be used as an emulsifier and an antidote for saponins in medicine. The most important sterols in the human body are mainly synthesized in liver cells. It can be converted into a variety of biologically active substances in the body. But unabsorbed cholesterol will deposit on the blood vessel wall, causing cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases
