    Polyacrylamide (PAM) is a linear polymer, which is one of the most widely used water-soluble polymers. The chemical formula is (C3H5NO)n. At room temperature is a hard glassy solid, the products are liquid glue, latex and white powder, translucent beads and flakes. Good thermal stability. Because polyacrylamide structural units contain amide groups, easy to form hydrogen bonds, so that it has good water solubility and high chemical activity, easy to graft or crosslinking to obtain a variety of modifications with branch chain or network structure. It can dissolve in water in any proportion, and the water solution is a uniform and transparent liquid. After long-term storage, the viscosity of the solution will decrease due to the slow degradation of the polymer, especially when the storage and transportation conditions are poor. [1] As a lubricant, suspension agent, clay stabilizer, oil displacement agent, water loss reducer and thickening agent, polyacrylamide has been widely used in drilling, acidizing, fracturing, water plugging, cementing, secondary oil recovery and tertiary oil recovery, and is a very important oilfield chemical.
    It is also suitable for removing suspended turbidity and sludge concentration and dehydration of industrial water, and sludge concentration and dehydration of industrial and domestic sewage treatment plants. Paper industry wastewater treatment and aid filtration, retention, strengthening agents; Used in metal and mining, food fermentation, product concentration in chemical industry, wastewater treatment; Used for oily wastewater treatment and oilfield chemicals. Polyacrylamide is known as "100 auxiliaries".
    Polyacrylamide cationic type, anionic type, molecular weight between 400 ~ 18 million, the product appearance is white or slightly yellow powder, liquid is colorless viscous colloidal, easy to dissolve in water, temperature more than 120℃ easy to decompose. Polyacrylamide can be divided into the following types: anion
    Type, cationic type, nonionic type, compound ionic type. Colloid products for colorless transparent, non-toxic, non - corrosive. The powder is white granular. Both are soluble in water, but almost insoluble in organic solvents. Different varieties, different molecular weight products have different properties.

    physicochemical property

    Polyacrylamide is a water-soluble linear polymer caused by free radical polymerization of acrylamide (AM) monomer, with good flocculation, can reduce the friction resistance between liquids, according to ionic characteristics can be divided into non-ionic, anionic, cationic and amphoteric four types. Polyacrylamide (PAM) is insoluble in most organic solvents, such as methanol, ethanol, acetone, ether, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and aromatic hydrocarbons, except for a few polar organic solvents, such as acetic acid, acrylic acid, chloroacetic acid, glycol, glycerin, molten urea, and formamide. But the solubility of these organic solvents is limited, often need to be heated, otherwise not much application value. It can dissolve in water in any proportion, and the water solution is a uniform and transparent liquid. The size of molecular weight has little effect on the solubility, but when the solution concentration is higher than 10%, the polymer with high molecular weight can show a gel-like structure due to the interaction of hydrogen atoms between molecules. High molecular weight solution is pseudoplastic fluid.

    At suitable low concentration, the polyacrylamide solution can be regarded as a network structure, and the mechanical entanglement and hydrogen bond between chains form network nodes. At higher concentrations, PAM solutions appear gel-like because they contain many chain-to-chain contacts. PAM aqueous solution and many can and water miscible organic matter has good compatibility, has good compatibility to electrolyte, ammonium chloride, calcium sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium borate, sodium nitrate, sodium phosphate, sodium sulfate, zinc chloride, boric acid and phosphoric acid and other substances are not sensitive.

    Polyacrylamide is white powder or small particles with a density of 1.302g/cm3 (23℃), glass transition temperature of 153℃, softening temperature of 210℃ [1], the general method of drying contains a small amount of water, dry and will soon absorb water from the environment, with freeze-drying separation of the homopolymer is white soft non-crystalline solid, But when precipitated from the solution and dry is a glassy part of the transparent solid, completely dry polyacrylamide PAM is a brittle white solid, commodity polyacrylamide is usually dry under moderate conditions, the general water content of 5%~15%, cast in the glass plate preparation of polymer film, is transparent, hard, fragile solid.

    Under hypoxia condition, heat to 210℃ due to water loss weight; Continue heating to 210~300℃ when the amide group decomposition into ammonia and water; When the temperature rises to 500℃, black flakes of 40 percent of their original weight form.

    Water treatment applications

    Water treatment includes raw water treatment, sewage treatment and industrial water treatment. It can be used in combination with activated carbon in raw water treatment, and can be used to coagulate and clarify suspended particles in domestic water. If organic flocculant acrylamide is used instead of inorganic flocculant, the water purification capacity can be increased by more than 20% even if the sedimentation tank is not reformed. In sewage treatment, using polyacrylamide can increase the utilization rate of water reuse cycle, but also can be used as sludge dewatering; It is used as an important formulation agent in industrial water treatment. The largest application of polyacrylamide in the field of water treatment abroad, domestic application in this field is being promoted. The main role of polyacrylamide in water treatment:

    (1) Reduce the amount of flocculant. Under the premise of achieving the same water quality, the use of polyacrylamide as coagulant aid with other flocculants can greatly reduce the amount of flocculant;

    (2) Improve water quality. In drinking water treatment and industrial wastewater treatment, polyacrylamide combined with inorganic flocculant can obviously improve water quality;

    (3) Improving floc strength and settling speed. The flocculation formed by polyacrylamide has high strength and good settling performance, which improves the separation speed of solid and liquid, and is conducive to sludge dewatering.

    (4) Anti-corrosion and anti-scaling of circulating cooling system. The use of polyacrylamide can greatly reduce the amount of inorganic flocculant, so as to avoid the deposition of inorganic substances on the surface of the equipment, slow down the corrosion and scaling of the equipment.

    Application in oil production

    Polyacrylamide is a kind of multifunctional oilfield chemical treatment agent, widely used in oil drilling, cementing, completion, workover, fracturing, acidizing, water injection, water plugging profile control, tertiary oil production operations, especially in the field of drilling, water plugging profile control and tertiary oil production. Polyacrylamide aqueous solution has high viscosity, good thickening, flocculation and rheological regulation, and is used as oil displacement agent and drilling mud regulator in oil exploitation. In the middle and late stage of oil exploitation, polymer flooding and three compound oil driving technology are mainly popularized in our country in order to improve the crude oil recovery rate. By injecting polyacrylamide aqueous solution, the oil-water velocity ratio was improved and the crude oil content in the produced material was increased. The addition of polyacrylamide to the tertiary recovery can increase the oil displacement capacity, avoid the breakdown of the reservoir, and improve the recovery efficiency of the oil bed. China's petroleum industry is the largest user of polyacrylamide, the technological progress of polyacrylamide has promoted the development of China's petroleum industry, and the demand of petroleum industry has accelerated the pace of technological innovation of polyacrylamide and the development of the industry.

    Applications in the field of paper making

    Polyacrylamide is widely used in the field of paper as retention agent, filter aid, homogenizing agent to improve the quality of paper, slurry dehydration performance, fine fiber and filler retention rate, reduce the consumption of raw materials and environmental pollution, as a dispersant, can improve the uniformity of paper. Polyacrylamide is mainly used in the paper industry in two aspects, one is to improve the retention of fillers, pigments and so on to reduce the loss of raw materials and environmental pollution; The second is to improve the strength of the paper. Adding polyacrylamide to the paper can improve the retention rate of fine fibers and filler particles in the net and accelerate the dehydration of the paper. The action mechanism of polyacrylamide is that the particles in the slurry can be retained on the press cloth by electroneutralization or bridging. The formation of floc can also make the water in the slurry easier to filter out, reduce the loss of fiber in white water, reduce environmental pollution, and help to improve the efficiency of filtration and precipitation equipment.

    Applications in the field of medical materials

    Polyacrylamide gel can be used as non-prothrombin granulating agent, raw material for surgery, contact lenses, outer coating of microcapsules, and used in the manufacture of high quality hemostatic tethers, women's sanitary napkins and children's diapers. Polyacrylamide with a particle size of hundreds to tens of microns can be used as chromatographic fillers (such as gel column fillers) and can effectively separate spherical proteins such as cytochrome. It can further desalinate and concentrate protein. After the Mannich reaction, the polyacrylamide resin introduces L-proline or L-hydroxyproline into the amide group side chain via methylene bridge, and then gets chiral ligand resin after coordination with copper ion, which can effectively resolve a series of DL-amino acids. The polyvinylamine resin obtained by Hofmann degradation is then complexed with copper ions, which can be used as the stationary phase of ligand exchange chromatography to separate a series of amino acids. The separation effect of aromatic amino acids is especially good. Due to the strong hydrophilicity of the skeleton, the separation time is greatly shortened.

    Applications in other industries

    Food industry, used in sugarcane sugar, beet sugar production sugarcane juice clarification and syrup phosphorus float extraction. Enzyme preparation fermentation fluid flocculation clarifying industry, also used for feed protein recovery, stable quality, good performance, recovery of protein powder on chicken survival rate and weight gain, egg production without adverse effects, synthetic resin coating, civil grouting material water plugging, building materials industry, improve the quality of cement, construction adhesives, caulking repair and water blocking agent, soil improvement, electroplating industry, printing and dyeing industry.
