BP launched the Cativa technology patent in 1996, the Cativa process uses a new catalyst system based on iridium, and uses a variety of new additives, such as rhenium, ruthenium, osmium, etc., iridium catalyst system activity is higher than rhodium catalyst, less byproducts, and can be operated in a lower water concentration (less than 5%), can greatly improve the traditional methanol carbonylation process. Cut production costs by up to 30% and expansion costs by 50%. In addition, due to the reduction of water concentration, CO utilization efficiency is improved, and steam consumption is reduced.
Celanese AOPlus process
Celanese is also one of the world's largest acetic acid producers. In 1978, the Hearst-Celanese Company (now Celanese Corporation) industrially commissioned the Monsanto process acetic acid plant in Lake Clare, Texas. In 1980, Celanese patented the AOPlus process (acid optimization method) technology, which greatly improved the Monsanto process.
AOPlus process by adding high concentration of inorganic iodine (mainly lithium iodide) to improve the stability of rhodium catalyst, adding lithium iodide and methane iodide, the concentration of water in the reactor is reduced to 4% ~ 5%, but the carbonylation reaction rate is still very high, thus greatly reducing the separation cost of the unit. The change of catalyst composition makes the reactor run at low water concentration (4%-5%), which improves the carbonylation reaction yield and separation and purification capacity.
