Function
Cisplatin is a potent platinum-based anti-neoplastic agent that is believed to form inter- and intrastrand DNA adducts which activate signaling pathways culminating in apoptosis. The compound has also been shown to induce apoptosis through caspase-3 activation and XIAP expression. Also shown to cause immunosuppression which is thought to be followed by an increase in the host immune response. Platinated DNA adducts also enhance poisoning of DNA topoisomerase I by camptothecin (sc-200871). Cisplatin was the first member of a class of anticancer drugs, which now include carboplatin (sc-202093) and oxaliplatin (sc-202270), that form DNA adducts resulting in apoptosis; however, these molecules also bind other biological molecules such as enzymes which might play a role in their mechanism of action.
Application
Cisplatin, cisplatinum, or cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II)  is a platinum-based chemotherapydrug used to treat various types of cancers, including sarcomas, somecarcinomas (e.g. small cell lung cancer, and ovarian cancer), lymphomas, andgerm cell tumors.It was the first member of a class of anti-cancer drugs which now also includes carboplatin and oxaliplatin. These platinum complexes react in vivo, binding to and causing crosslinking of DNA which ultimately triggers apoptosis (programmed cell death).
