In living organisms, AKG is not only an important transitional product in the TCA cycle, but also a precursor of L-glutamate, L-glutamine, L-proline, and L-arginine. Experimental studies conducted on animals have shown that AKG, glutamine, and glutamic acid ingested by animals are absorbed and metabolized in the upper part of the small intestine. Up to 95% of glutamic acid and 70% of glutamine are degraded into CO2, while only 40% of AKG is degraded.
