Description
Dimethylmercury is an organic compound containing mercury, with the chemical formula C2H6Hg. It is volatile, flammable, highly toxic, and the most dangerous organic mercury compound known. It is harmful to the human nervous system, IQ, and memory, and a few microliters can be lethal. Dimethylmercury is a colorless liquid at room temperature and pressure, insoluble in water, stable in water, and can only react with inorganic acids at a significant rate at high temperatures, while the corresponding organic cadmium and organic zinc compounds (as well as most metal alkyls) are rapidly hydrolyzed. It is easily soluble in ethanol and ether, can penetrate latex, and dissolve rubber and raw rubber. The relative density of dimethylmercury is 3.1874 (20°C), the boiling point is 92°C (98.66kPa), the melting point is -43°C (98.7kPa), the flash point is 20°C, and the refractive index is 1.5452.

Use powder, foam, carbon dioxide. In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
Evacuate danger area! Remove all ignition sources. Personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Collect leaking liquid in covered containers. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations. Do NOT wash away into sewer.

Dimethylmercury Use and Manufacturing
As inorganic reagent. Dimethylmercury is used as a reagent ininorganic synthesis, and as a reference standardfor mercury nuclear magnetic resonance(Hg NMR). It is an environmental pollutantfound in bottom sediments and also inthe bodies of birds and marine mammalssuch as whales and fishes. It occurs in fishesand birds along with monomethylmercury. Inhumans, its presence is attributed to the consumptionof pilot whale meat, cod fish, andother sea food.
