Tetracycline hydrochloride is the hydrochloride form of the tetracycline. Tetracycline is a kind of broad-spectrum polyketide antibiotics produced by the Streptomyces genus of antinobacteria. It is a kind of bacteriostatic antibiotics which inhibits the bacteria growth through binding to the 30 S ribosomal subunit, blocking the aminoacyl tRNA from binding to the translating ribosome, thus interfering with the protein synthesis process.
Tetracycline hydrochloride is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with bactericidal activity at high concentrations. In addition to common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and anaerobic bacteria, most rickettsiae, mycoplasma, chlamydia, atypical mycobacteria, spirochetes, actinomycetes, Bacillus anthracis, Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium difficile and Nocardia spp. are sensitive to this product. It is more effective against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria, but Enterococcus spp. and penicillin-resistant gonococci are resistant to it. It has good antibacterial activity against Vibrio, Brucella, Campylobacter, Yersinia and other Gram-negative bacteria, but not against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Previously Tetracycline Hcl were used for a variety of common infections, including bacterial gastroenteritis, pneumonia and urinarytract infections. However, numerous strains of bacteria causing these infections now are resistant and other agents have mostly superseded tetracyclines.

The first choice for the treatment of non bacterial infection of Chlamydia, Rickettsia, mycoplasma pneumonia disease, relapsing fever and other infections, but also for the treatment of brucellosis, cholera, tularemia, rat bite fever, anthrax, tetanus, plague, actinomycosis, gas gangrene and sensitive bacterial respiratory system, bile duct, urinary tract infection and skin and soft tissue infection etc.
The mechanism of action of tetracycline hydrochloride is mainly to prevent the binding of aminyl groups to ribonucleoprotein bodies, preventing the growth of peptide chains and protein synthesis, thus inhibiting the growth of bacteria, and also having a bactericidal effect at high concentrations. There is cross-resistance between this product and oxytetracycline. It is mainly used clinically for bacillary dysentery, trachoma, whooping cough, pneumonia, septic meningitis, skin infections and otitis media.
