    Phenolphthalein, chemical name 3, 3-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) -3h-isobenzofuranone, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C20H14O4, a white to slightly yellow crystalline powder, soluble in ethanol and alkali solutions, slightly soluble in ether, very slightly soluble in chloroform, insoluble in water, characterized by colorless in acidic and neutral solutions. It is purplish red in alkaline solutions. It is often used as an acid-base indicator.
