    Phenolphthalein is a weak organic acid with molecular formula C20H14O4, simple structure of (C6H4OH) 2COC6H4CO, colorless lactone in pH <8.2, and pink quinone when pH> 8.2. It is a commonly used acid and base indicator. The quinone or quinone acid, very unstable in alkaline media, slowly transforms into colorless carboxylate; and immediately transforms into colorless carboxylate. Therefore, when the phenolphthalein reagent drops into the concentrated lye, the phenolphthalein begins to turn red, and soon the red recedes and becomes colorless. Phenolphthalein is colorless at pH less than 8.2 to 0 and appears orange in strong acid bodies. Phenolphthalein is white or micro band yellow small crystals, insoluble in water and easily soluble in alcohol. Therefore, phenolphthalein is usually formulated as an alcoholic solution. When the phenolphthalein reagent drops into water or neutral and acidic aqueous solution, there will be white turbidity, which is because alcohol is easily soluble in water, making the reagent insoluble in water. Phenolphthalein is made by condensation of phthalic anhydride with two molecules of phenol heated by concentrated sulfuric acid. This method was discovered in time by Adolf von Baier in 1871.
