Overview
Somastatin (SST) is a growth inhibitory hormone. It was first discovered by Brazen et al. in 1973 from the hypothalamus of animals. It mainly has two active forms of 14 and 28 amino acids. It is widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems and the gastrointestinal tract. It also exists in the hearts of rats and humans. In the gastrointestinal mucosa, somatostatin is released by D cells, and its content is highest in the gastric antrum and gastric body. Somatostatin can inhibit the secretion of bombesin, α-deoxyglucose, etc., reduce the activity of renin, and produce a hypotensive effect; somatostatin has a negative inotropic effect on the isolated guinea pig heart, and it can further reduce its cardiac index and arterial blood pressure in the presence of furosemide; it can regulate the secretion of digestive tract hormones and stabilize cell membranes, thus protecting it. In addition, somatostatin has an inhibitory effect on the secretion of the entire gastrointestinal tract.
Pharmacological action

Somatostatin can inhibit the secretion of gastrin, gastric acid and pepsin, thereby treating upper gastrointestinal bleeding, and can significantly reduce the blood flow of internal organs without causing significant changes in systemic arterial blood pressure.
