Product Description

Potassium iodide is commonly known as gray iodine. Chemical formula KI. Molecular weight 166.00. Colorless or white cubic crystals. The taste is salty and bitter. Slightly deliquescent in humid air, easily oxidized when exposed to air, precipitates iodine and gradually turns yellow. Light and moisture can accelerate its decomposition. Specific gravity 3.13. Melting point 681 ºC. Boiling point 1330 ºC. Easy to dissolve in water, soluble in et-hanol, glycerol, and liquid slightly soluble in ether. Its aqueous solution is neutral or slightly alkaline, and water-soluble Chemicalbook solution can dissolve iodine, generating triiodide ions (I3-). Its aqueous solution is also prone to oxidation and yellowing, making it easier when acidic. Adding alkali can prevent it. Obtained by the interaction of hy-droiodic acid and potassium bicarbonate. Used as an analytical reagent and raw material for producing iodides and dyes, as well as as as a photosensitive emulsifier and food additive. In medicine, it is used to prevent and treat goiter (large neck disease), as well as for preoperative preparation of hyperthyroidism. In addition, it can also be used as expectorant and diuretic drugs.

Potassium iodide is an odorless white solid. Sinks and mixes with water. (USCG, 1999)|Potassium iodide is a metal iodide salt with a K(+) counterion. It is a scavenger of hydroxyl radicals. It has a role as a radical scavenger and an expectorant. It contains an iodide.|Saturated solution of Potassium Iodide (SSKI) is used pharmaceutically for emergency use in patients experiencing acute symptoms of severe hyperthyroidism (also known as thyroid storm or thyrotoxic crisis). SSKI can also be used for radioiodine-contamination emergencies or in preparation of thyrotoxic patients for thyroidectomy.|Potassium Iodide is a metal halide composed of potassium and iodide with thyroid protecting and expectorant properties. Potassium iodide can block absorption of radioactive iodine by the thyroid gland through flooding the thyroid with non-radioactive iodine and preventing intake of radioactive molecules, thereby protecting the thyroid from cancer causing radiation.
