Description	Rebamipide is used for mucosal protection, healing of gastroduodenal ulcers, and treatment of gastritis. It works by enhancing mucosal defense, scavenging free radicals, and temporarily activating genes encoding cyclooxygenase-2. Studies have shown that rebamipide can fight the damaging effects of NSAIDs on the GIT mucosa, and more recently, the small intestine, but not for naproxen-induced gastric damage.

Rebamipide is a gastroprotective drug.

1. Mechanism of action

It works by enhancing the defense mechanisms of the gastric mucosa. It promotes the synthesis of prostaglandin E₂, which has a cytoprotective effect on the gastric mucosa. Prostaglandin E₂ helps to increase mucus secretion, improve mucosal blood flow, and strengthen the resistance of the gastric mucosa against various harmful factors such as gastric acid and pepsin.

Rebamipide also has an anti - oxidative effect. It can scavenge free radicals generated during the inflammatory process in the stomach, reducing oxidative stress - induced damage to the gastric mucosa.

2. Medical uses

Treatment of gastric ulcers: It helps in the healing process of gastric ulcers by protecting the damaged mucosa and promoting tissue repair. By improving the local environment of the ulcer site, it accelerates the closure of the ulcer crater and reduces symptoms such as abdominal pain and discomfort associated with ulcers.

Treatment of gastritis: In cases of chronic gastritis, Rebamipide can alleviate inflammation. It reduces the infiltration of inflammatory cells into the gastric mucosa and helps to restore the normal physiological function of the mucosa.

Prevention of recurrence: After the healing of ulcers or improvement of gastritis, Rebamipide can be used for a period of time to prevent the recurrence of these diseases.

3. Pharmacokinetics

After oral administration, Rebamipide is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It reaches peak plasma concentrations within a few hours. The drug is metabolized in the liver, and the metabolites are mainly excreted through the kidneys.

4. Side effects

The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. However, these side effects are generally mild and transient. In rare cases, allergic reactions such as skin rashes and itching may occur.

5. Precautions

When using Rebamipide, it is necessary to pay attention to possible drug - drug interactions. It may interact with other drugs that affect the liver metabolism or renal excretion.
