Sodium sulfate, with the chemical formula Na₂SO₄, is an inorganic compound with many properties and a wide range of uses.

Physical Properties:
Appearance: colorless crystal or white powder.
Density: about 2.68g/cm³ (anhydrous).
Melting point: 884°C (anhydrous).
Solubility: soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in acetone.
Chemical Properties:
Sodium sulfate ionizes in aqueous solution to sodium ions and sulfate ions.
Sodium sulfate reacts with soluble barium salt to produce barium sulfate precipitate and corresponding sodium salt, which is one of the common methods to test sulfate ion.
Sodium sulfate can be decomposed into sodium oxide, sulfur trioxide and oxygen at high temperatures, but is usually stable at room temperature.
Uses
Chemical industry:
Used in the manufacture of pulp, glass, detergents, dyes, cellulose and so on.
In the inorganic salt industry, it is used to manufacture sodium sulfide, sodium sulfite and so on.
Textile Industry:
Used as a dyeing aid to help dyes adhere better to fibers.
Pharmaceutical field:
Used in the manufacture of laxatives (e.g., mannitol, the main component of which is sodium sulfate decahydrate).
Used medically as a laxative and antidote for barium salt poisoning, etc.
Water Treatment:
Used to soften hard water by removing calcium and magnesium ions from the water.
Agriculture:
Used as a soil conditioner to improve soil fertility and permeability.
Used as an additive in fertilizers to provide the elemental sulfur needed by plants.
Other Uses:
Used as a tanning agent in the leather industry.
Used as fixing agent in the photographic industry.
Used in the manufacture of anhydrous sodium sulfate (metabolite) for chemical analysis, glass and paper industries, etc.
