Description
Ethyl bromide is a halogenated hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C2H5Br, abbreviated as EtBr. It is a colorless to yellow volatile liquid that turns into a gas at temperatures above 101 °F (38 ℃). Ethyl bromide has an ether-like odor and a burnt taste. Ethyl bromide is miscible with alcohols, ethers, chloroform, and organic solvents. Its water solubility at 25 ℃ is 9000 mg l-1. It is incompatible with alkali metals, aluminum, magnesium, strong bases, water, and strong oxidants. The vapor density of ethyl bromide relative to air is 3.76, and the flash point is below 0°F. It is highly flammable and can easily form explosive mixtures with air.

Ethyl bromide Use and Manufacturing
Ethyl bromide is an organic solvent that can be used as an intermediate in the preparation of anesthetic drugs such as phenperidine and propofol. In addition, it can be used as a local anesthetic in surgery to produce a rapid and short-term anesthetic effect. Ethyl bromide can be used with hydrochlorothiazide and other drugs to synthesize anti-epileptic drugs, exerting sedative, hypnotic, anticonvulsant and other effects. Ethyl bromide can be used for crop protection, preparing intermediates for organophosphorus, organochlorine, organofluorine and other pesticides, and it can also be used directly as a pesticide to kill pests in plantations. Ethyl bromide can be used to prepare some special-purpose coatings, such as steel structure fire-retardant coatings, which can play a role in extinguishing fires. Ethyl bromide is also an effective flame retardant, which can be used to prepare flame retardants for plastic products such as polycarbonate, polyethylene, and polystyrene. Adding an appropriate amount of Ethyl bromide can reduce the toxic gases and smoke released when plastics burn, and reduce the losses caused by fires.
