It is a white or grayish-white, lumpy, water-soluble powder that loses its water of crystallization when heated. It decomposes at a temperature of about 852°C (1560°F). It exists in solution only. It is prepared by the combination of carbon dioxide and water.

PH:Aqueous solutions are strongly alkaline. At 25 °C, the pH of 1, 5 and 10 wt% sodium carbonate solutions are 11.37, 11.58 and 11.70, respectively.
Experimental Properties:Begins to lose carbon dioxide at 400 °C; hygroscopic; on exposure to air it will gradually absorb 1 mole water, about 15%. Decomposed by acids with effervescence. Combines with water with evolution of heat.|Undergoes monoclinic (beta) to monoclinic (alpha) transition at 3 °C and monoclinic (beta) to hexagonal (alpha) transition at 4 °C.|Enthalpy of fusion: 29.7 kJ/mol at 856 °C|Colorless orthorhombic crystals; MP: 100 °C; density: 2.25 g/cu cm; solubility: 30.7 g/100 g water at 25 °C; insoluble in ethanol /Sodium carbonate monohydrate/|Odorless; white, small crystals or crystalline powder; alkaline taste; density 1.55.
