Sodium sucrose octasulfate, also known as sodium glucosate octasulfate, is an organic sulfide. It is a white solid that is soluble in water.

Sodium sucrose octasulfate is irritating and may have an irritating effect on the skin and eyes, so direct contact should be avoided. When storing, it is necessary to avoid contact with strong oxidants to avoid the production of dangerous substances.

Applications in pharmaceutical formulations or formulation processes
◎ As a new type of excipient, sodium sucrose octasulfate has a wide range of uses. In liposomes, sucrose octasulfate is mainly used in irinotecan liposomes, which can make irinotecan gel or precipitate in the aqueous phase and be stably encapsulated, so as to improve the encapsulation efficiency of drugs.

◎ As a heparin chemical analogue, it has been shown to activate the FGF signaling pathway. In vitro studies have shown that it can mimic heparin-supported fibroblast growth factor FGF to induce the generation of new blood vessels and cell proliferation, and has the effect of promoting wound healing.

◎ It is also used in the prevention and treatment of dental diseases, cosmetics to fill wrinkles and prevent diaper rash.

Application examples
◎ In the experimental study of the inhibitory effect of acidic polysaccharides from plant sources on the adhesion of pathogenic bacteria, the comparative data of low molecular weight heparin and sucrose sodium octasulfite were reported. In trypsinized erythrocytes, sodium sucrose octasulfate salt potently inhibits Porphyromonas gingivals-induced hemagglutination in vitro.

◎ The combination of N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan and sucrose potassium octasulfate or sodium salt has a hydrophilic synergistic effect, and the external composition with both as active ingredients can effectively absorb and retain water, slow down the water loss through the epidermis, and maintain and restore the water balance of the skin.
