      Strong oxidant
Benzoyl peroxide is a strong oxidant that can be used to bleach organic matter, such as flour, vegetable oils, etc., but it has a strong destructive effect on β-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin B1 in flour. The maximum usage is 0.25-0.3g/kg flour; it is easily decomposed into free radicals when heated to 70-90℃, and is widely used as an initiator for polymerization reactions of olefin monomers (vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, etc.) and photochemical reactions. Excessive use will cause the polymer to change color and turn yellow. It also has a reducing effect on certain pigments. Benzoyl peroxide can decompose rapidly when heated to about 100℃, and can cause explosions in sealed containers. It should be handled as a dangerous item. Benzoyl peroxide is sensitive to impact and friction, and the risk of explosion is very high. It should be avoided from contact with metallic powders, activated carbon and reducing agents, and the safety precautions on the container label must be followed. To prevent fire and explosion hazards, it is usually diluted to about 20% with three or more substances such as calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, magnesium carbonate, alum, starch, etc. (diluted benzoyl peroxide).
    Physical and chemical properties
Benzoyl peroxide is also known as dibenzoyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, Acetoxyl, Acnegel, Benoxyl, Lucidol, Nericur, Xerac, BP5. White orthorhombic crystals or crystalline powder. Slightly smells of benzaldehyde. Has a bitter taste. Relative molecular weight 242.23. Relative density 1.3440 (25℃). Melting point 103~106℃ (decomposes and explodes). Refractive index 1.545. Flash point 125℃. Strong oxidant, easy to burn and explode. Very slightly soluble in water, slightly soluble in methanol and isopropanol, soluble in ethanol (1.2g/100g), acetone (18.5g/100g), chloroform (26.8g/100g), ethyl acetate (14.4g/100g), benzene (18.6g/100g), ether (8.6g/100g). The half-life in the solution is 2.1h (85℃), 10h (72℃). Decomposes slowly in alkaline solution. Stable at room temperature, easy to explode due to friction, impact or heating in a dry state. Adding sulfuric acid can burn. Because it is a strong oxidant, it can cause inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes. Oral LD50 of mice is 3949mg/kg. Preparation method: Take benzoyl chloride as the raw material, react with sodium peroxide (or hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide), and get crude benzoyl peroxide, which is then recrystallized and refined in benzene or acetone. First add 50% sodium hydroxide solution, then add hydrogen peroxide, and finally add benzoyl chloride slowly at 0-10°C. The order cannot be reversed.
