Summarize

Paraffin oil (or paraffin) refers to any kind of colorless and odorless high-grade alkanes extracted from mineral sources, especially from petroleum distillates. Usually, paraffin oil is obtained through the fractionation of petroleum and as a by-product in the process of manufacturing gasoline from petroleum raw materials. Paraffin oil is transparent, colorless, and mainly composed of alkanes and cyclic paraffins (related to vaseline). Paraffin oil can be classified into light and heavy grades, with a density of approximately 0.8 g/cm³. The production of paraffin oil is very large, and its price is relatively low. It is often sold in pharmacies.

Chemical property

Colorless and semi-transparent liquid, odorless and tasteless. Relative density is low. 0.831 - 0.863, flash point 164 - 228℃. It can be dissolved in ether, petroleum ether, volatile oil, and can be mixed with most non-volatile oils (excluding castor oil). It is insoluble in water and ethanol. It is stable to light, heat and acid, but will slowly oxidize when exposed to heat or light for a long time. No abnormality was observed in rats after oral administration of 1.25g/kg. There are no special regulations for ADI (tentatively set, FAO/WHO, 1994).

Purpose

As defoaming agents and coating agents, China stipulates that they can be used for the preservation of soft candies and eggs, with a maximum usage amount of 5.0g/kg; they can also be used for the removal of coatings from bread and for defoaming in fermentation processes, and should be used in appropriate amounts as per production needs. They are mainly used in the manufacture of laundry detergents, synthetic detergents, etc., and can also be used in synthetic petroleum protein, plastic plasticizers, pesticide emulsifiers, etc. Gas chromatography stationary liquid (maximum operating temperature 120℃, solvent is toluene), used for separating and analyzing hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, inorganic compounds and fatty acid esters.
