1,4-Butanediol has a wide range of applications. In the United States and Western Europe, more than half is used for the production of tetrahydrofuran, followed by the production of γ-butyrolactone and polyethylene terephthalate, which is an emerging engineering plastic; 1,4-butanediol is used as a chain extender and polyester raw material for the production of polyurethane elastomers and soft polyurethane foams; 1,4-butanediol derivatives are good plasticizers for cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylate, and polyester; 1,4-butanediol has good hygroscopicity and flexibility, and can be used as a softening agent for gelatin and an absorbent for glass paper and other unprocessed papers. It can also be used to prepare N-methylpyrrolidone, N-vinylpyrrolidone and other pyrrolidone derivatives, and is also used to prepare vitamin B6, pesticides, herbicides, and solvents, plasticizers, lubricants, humidifying agents, softening agents, adhesives and brighteners for electroplating in various process industries.
