Formamide is an organic compound, the molecular formula is CH3NO, colorless transparent liquid, is a synthetic medicine, spices, dyes and other raw materials, can also be used as a solvent for synthetic fibers, plastic processing, wood casein ink production.

I. Chemical name: Formamide II. CAS No.: 75-12-7 III. molecular formula: HCONH2;CH3NO IV. molecular Weight: 45.04 V. EINECS No.: 200-842-0 VI. chemical properties: Clear, colorless liquid and with ammonia-like-weak odor.m.p.2.55°C,b.p.210-212°C (partial decomposition beginning at 180°C),flash point 154°C , proportion 1.1334(20°C). Be soluble in water and alcohol, slightly soluble in benzene and ether, etc, hygroscopic.

Colorless, transparent, odorless with water absorbability oil liquid. Contains impurities with slightly ammonia smell. Insoluble in ether and chlorinated solvents, soluble in benzene, can be mixed with water, methanol, ethanol, acetic acid, acetone, dioxane, ethylene glycol, phenol and lower ester. This product can dissolve casein, but it doesn't dissolve albumin. Formamide can strongly corrode copper, brass, lead and rubber.

It is used as a solvent for man-made leather and chemical fiber, also used as material for the synthesis of insecticide of high-effectiveness and low-toxicity, as a gas, absorbent to separate and purify the gas in the petrochemical industry, as a material of sulfadiazine, cortisone, and Vitamin B6 in the pharmaceutical industry, and also the as fixing agent in vapor-phase analysis.

Formamide has active reactivity and special dissolution ability, can be used as organic synthesis raw material, paper treatment agent, fiber industry softener, animal glue softener, and also used as an analytical reagent to determine the amino acid content in rice.

Reacts with water very slowly at room temperature, but rate is accelerated by acids and bases at elevated temperatures. Incompatible with iodine, pyridine and sulfur trioxide. Reacts explosively with furfuryl alcohol, H2O2, Tl(NO3)3.H2O, nitromethane and P2O5. An effective solvent: dissolves casein, glucose, tannins, starch, lignin, polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose acetate, nylon, the chlorides of copper, lead, zinc, tin, cobalt, iron, aluminum and nickel, the acetates of the alkali metals, some inorganic sulfates and nitrates.
