Phthalic anhydride is an organic compound with molecular formula c8h4o3. It is a cyclic anhydride formed by intramolecular dehydration of phthalic acid. Phthalic anhydride is a white solid. It is an important raw material in chemical industry, especially in the manufacture of plasticizer. Hydrolysis,alcoholysis and ammonolysis can occur, and anthraquinone derivatives can be synthesized by reacting with aromatic hydrocarbons. Phthalic anhydride is industrially prepared by vapor phaseoxidation of naphthalene and air at 350 ~ 360 ºC under the catalysis of vanadium pentoxide. It can also be prepared by air oxidation of o-xylene.

Plasticizers: Phthalic anhydride is an important raw material for the production of phthalate ester plasticizers, which are often used in plastic products such as PVC.
Resin: It is also an important raw material for the production of unsaturated polyester resin, alkyd resin and epoxy resin curing agents.
