      Product Detail

N-heptane is an organic compound with the formula C8H18. It is a colorless liquid with a distinctive odor.

N-heptane has many important uses. First, it is often used as a fuel additive and solvent. Due to its good combustion performance and low toxicity, n-heptane can be used as an additive to gasoline and  improve fuel purification and combustion efficiency. In addition, n-heptane is also widely used in the rubber industry and coatings industry as a solvent for dissolving and diluting various chemical substances.

There are two main ways to produce n-heptane. The first is obtained by distillation in the petroleum refining process. N-heptane can be obtained by separating hydrocarbon compounds with different carbon chain lengths in a petroleum fractiator by controlling temperature. The second method is to prepare the alkane by hydrogenation. In this reaction, using precious metal catalysts such as platinum and hydrogen, a hydrocarbon compound with a long carbon chain is hydrolyzed to obtain n-heptane. In general, n-heptane has important uses in the energy and chemical industries, and can be produced by methods such as petroleum refining and hydrogenation reactions

      Application

    1. Used as an analytical reagent, gasoline engine knock test standard, reference material for chromatographic analysis, solvent.

    2. It can be used as extraction solvent of animal and plant oils and fast drying rubber adhesive. Solvent for rubber industry. Also used in paints, varnishes, fast drying ink and printing industry as cleaning solvent.

    3. Used as the standard and solvent for octane number determination, as well as for organic synthesis and preparation of experimental reagents.

Heptane (and its many isomers) is widely used in laboratories as a non-polar solvent. As a liquid, it is ideal for transport and storage. In the grease spot test, heptane is used to dissolve an oil spot to show the previous presence of organic compounds on a stained paper. This is done by shaking the stained paper in a heptane solution for about half a minute.

Aqueous bromine may be distinguished from aqueous iodine by its appearance after extraction into heptane. In water, both bromine and iodine appear brown. However, iodine turns purple when dissolved in heptane, whereas the bromine solution remains brown.
