Orthophosphoric acid is industrially obtained by treating apatite with sulfuric acid. Phosphorus can be oxidized with nitric acid to obtain relatively pure phosphoric acid. It is generally a thick solution of 83% to 98%. If further concentrated, colorless crystals can be obtained. Phosphoric acid is prone to deliquescence in the air. Heating will gradually cause water loss to obtain pyrophosphoric acid, and further water loss to obtain metaphosphoric acid.
