Helicid, chemically known as p-formylphenyl O-β-D-allopyranoside (C₁₃H₁₆O₇), is an active glycoside monomer extracted from the fruits of Helicia nilagirica Bedd., a plant belonging to the Proteaceae family native to Yunnan Province, China. It appears as a white, needle-like, rod-like, or flaky crystalline powder with a slightly bitter taste and no odor. Helicid is soluble in hot water, sparingly soluble in water and ethanol, and insoluble in ether or chloroform. Its melting point ranges from 195 to 199°C.
