1.Inhibits the folate cycle and de novo purine biosynthesis, leading to increased intracellular levels of AICAR, a natural activator of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). This results in energy-independent activation of AMPK, a master regulator of cellular metabolism.

2.Under conditions of metabolic stress, MOTS-c can translocate from the mitochondria to the nucleus, where it regulates the expression of nuclear genes. This establishes a unique mitochondria-to-nucleus signaling pathway, distinguishing it from most peptides encoded by nuclear DNA.
