Apixaban.

Apixaban is a new oral factor Xa inhibitor jointly developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer, with the trade name of Eleto, which is a new oral anticoagulant drug. By inhibiting an important clotting factor, Xa, apixaban prevents thrombin production and thrombosis. On April 26, 2007, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer announced a collaboration to develop a new oral anticoagulant, apixaban, owned by Bristol-Myers Squibb, as an upgraded alternative to warfarin. Under the terms of the agreement, Pfizer will make an upfront payment of US$250 million to Bristol-Myers Squibb to cover 60% of the entire development costs of the anticoagulant apixaban, effective January 1, 2007, and Bristol-Myers Squibb will assume the remaining 40% to obtain the rights to co-develop and sell the drug. In May 2011, apixaban was the first in the European Union 27 countries, Iceland and Norway to be approved for the prevention of venous thrombosis in adult patients undergoing elective hip or knee replacement surgery. On November 20, 2012, the European Commission approved aloto (apixaban) for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in adults with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) who have one or more risk factors. Subsequently, the Canadian Food and Drug Administration, Japan, and the US FDA approved Eleto? (apixaban) is used for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in adults with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) with one or more risk factors.
