Description

Apixaban is a highly selective, reversible inhibitor of Factor Xa with Ki of 0.08 nM and 0.17 nM in human and rabbit, respectively.

Apixaban Use and Manufacturing

Apixaban, sold under the tradename Eliquis, is an anticoagulant for the treatment of venous thromboembolic events. It is taken by mouth. It is a direct factor Xa inhibitor.Apixaban was approved in Europe in 2012. It was approved in the U.S. in 2014 for treatment and secondary prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It is being developed in a joint venture by Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Drug Function and Efficacy

It is an oral selective activated factor X inhibitor that can prevent thrombosis, but the adverse reaction of bleeding is lower than that of the old drug warfarin. It is used to prevent thrombosis in patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery.
