      Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl

    I. Brief Introduction

    MMT is a kind of compound with an antiknock role to gasoline.

    At present, the generally adopted methods to improve the gasoline s octane number in China are process method, harmonic method, additive method, and other means. Due to the large investment and high cost of process method and harmonic method, and difficulties in changing gas range and others, they often cannot achieve the best production combination. Although MTBE can also be used to blend gasoline, the large addition, high cost, low oxygen heating value, environmental pollution and other bad factors also exist in adding MTBE for gasoline blending. Practice has proved that Mn-base metal organic compound is one of the antiknocks with good quality, as a result, adding Mn-base Oil Antiknock is the most economic and effective method to improve the gasoline s antiknock performance. Currently, as the best additive for the production of high grade unleaded gasoline, Mn-base Oil Antiknock has been used by many refineries at home and abroad.

     

    MMT produced by our Company can not only improve the gasoline s octane number effectively and can reduce the toxic gas emissions of automobile, the product purity can reach 98% and above, which has arrived at the international advanced level.     MMT is a kind of metal organic compound; the central Mn atom is located in a methyl cyclopentadiene group.

    3: Function mechanism of MMT

    The antiknock mechanism of MMT is it can be decomposed into active manganese oxide particles in the combustion

     

    conditions, because of its surface role, it can damage the peroxide generated in the car engine, and can reduce the peroxide s concentration, at the same time, it can interrupt part of the chain reactions optionally. Block the automatic ignition, reduce the energy release rate and make the fuel antiknock property improved.

    4: Performance characteristics of MMT

    1) Improve gas s octane number

    Add 90PPM MMT with the content of Mn no more than 16mg/L in the cat gasoline, the gas s octane number can be improved by 2 3 units.

    2) Coordination with MTBE, ethanol and other components with oxygen

    MMT, MTBE and ethanol have good combination in the improvement of the octane number, they can not only meet a relatively higher octane number, but also can avoid the reduced automobile engine power due to large quantity use of MTBE, and it can meet the national standard of (oxygen content is not more than 2.7%).

    3) Improve the oil s quality and flexibility to reduce the discharging of automobile exhaust and other pollutants

    4) Content of gasoline s aromatics and olefin can be reduced using gas with MMT, and the emissions of car pollutants and harmful gas can be effectively reduced by using it and contents of CO, NO × and others can be declined in varying degrees.

    IV. MMT Application Method

    Before use, the Company s technical personnel need to make inspection and evaluation to the compatibility of the customers all kinds of on-site equipment. Usually, MMT produced by Shaanxi Wonder New Materials Co.,Ltd . is compatible with most equipment engaged in mixing, distribution and delivery related to agent adding applied by existing refineries.

    1) MMT98 agent: For MMT with high concentration, it shall be diluted before added in gasoline. Add MMT and special additives into the solvent (such as gasoline, toluene, ethanol, solvent oil, etc.) at the same time, with the protection of N2, stir them 30 40 minutes to achieve full hybrid and make MMT solution, and then blend it into the gasoline according to the proportion.

    2) MMT62 agent: For MMT62 with low concentration, it can be directly blended into gasoline. MMT62 meets the national standard addition of 16mgMn/L gasoline, generally for 106 g/t gasoline (0.094mL/L petrol), just add it and stir it evenly. According to the gasoline properties of different oil refinery, it can improve 2-3 units octane number.

    V. MMT Addition

    Addition of MMT produced by Shaanxi Wonder New Materials Co.,Ltd . is determined by the initial value and the value needed to be improved of the fuel s octane number. And the suggested addition is 5-16 mgMn/L; the unit can consider the addition through the comparison with other products and the reference of domestic control indicators.

    For heavy oil Cat Gasoline, reforming Gasoline, MTBE, etc, after mixed with MMT produced by Shaanxi Wonder New Materials Co.,Ltd . according to a certain proportion, 95 or 97 high quality Gasoline can be produced with the blending of MMT; blend Catalytic cracking Gasoline and Distilled Gasoline, and add 16mgMn/L MMT, the blended oil can meet the specifications of 90 gasoline; when wax oil catalytic cracking gasoline RON is in 87-89, add MMT individually not more than 16mgMn/L, the octane number of the wax oil catalytic cracking gasoline can meet the specifications of 90 unleaded gasoline.

    VI. Storage, Transport and Package

    MMT produced by  Shaanxi Wonder New Materials Co.,Ltd . is packed by 200 L galvanized iron drum, with the weight of per drum is 250 kg (MMT98) and 200 kg (MMT62), and it can also adopt other package form according to the customer s actual need, such as 10 m3 steel tank, etc., the standard containers include large tank car, ISO standard tank, etc. Shelf life: 12 months (room temperature, avoid light). Store it in a cool, dry and well ventilated place, away from fire. Storage temperature: room temperature to 40 .

    Description Manganese, tricarbonyl methylcyclopentadienyl is a dark orange liquid. Faintly pleasant, herb-like odor. Molecular weight= 218.10;Boiling point=232℃; Freezing/Melting point=18℃; Flash point=74℃; 96℃. Hazard Identification (based on NFPA-704 M Rating System): Health 3, Flammability 0, Reactivity 0. Practically insoluble in water.
    Chemical Properties An orange liquid with a pleasant odor. Slightly soluble in water and denser than water. May be toxic by inhalation, ingestion and/or skin absorption. Faintly pleasant, herb-like odor.
    Uses Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl is used for doping of ZnSe nanocrystals

    Definition Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl is a dark orange liquid with a faintly pleasant odor. It is used as a fuel additive to abate smoke and as a gasolinc additive in antiknock mixes.
    Preparation Into a reaction flask under nitrogen was placed 1.26 parts bis(methylcyclopentadienyl) manganese (91.8% pure), 0.93 parts manganous acetate, 0.78 parts tetrahydrofuran (THF) and 17.31 parts toluene. Over a period of 15 minutes, a solution of 1.24 parts triethyl aluminum (TEA) in 8.70 parts of toluene was added to the above mixture with a vigorous stirring (Al/Mn atom ratio 1/1, TEA/THF mole ratio 1/1). The solution darkened slightly. This solution of the intermediate complex was transferred under nitrogen to a stainless steel autoclave. The autoclave was sealed, pressurized twice to 300 psig with carbon monoxide and vented and finally pressurized with carbon monoxide to 600 psig and heated while stirring to 100° C. Carbon monoxide was added as needed to maintain 600 psig. After two hours at 100° C., the temperature was raised to 150° C. for 30 minutes. The autoclave was then cooled, vented and discharged. The mixture was hydrolyzed with 10% aqueous HCl. An equal volume of pentane was added to extract the MMT. The pentane phase was analyzed by gas chromoatograph (GC) using a pentadecane internal standard to show a yield of Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl(MMT) based on manganese of 84% and, based on MCP, of 89%.
    General Description Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (hereinafter "MMT") is an antiknock agent for gasoline discovered in the fifties and sold commercially by Ethyl Corporation. It can be made by the reaction of carbon monoxide with bis(methylcyclopentadienyl) manganese referred to as "carbonylation". 
    Air & Water Reactions Slightly soluble in water.
    Reactivity Profile METHYLCYCLOPENTADIENYLMANGANESE TRICARBONYL decomposes when exposed to light. METHYLCYCLOPENTADIENYLMANGANESE TRICARBONYL is stable in water.
    Hazard Toxic by ingestion, inhalation, and skinabsorption. Central nervous system impairment;lung, liver and kidney damage.
    Health Hazard In concentrated form METHYLCYCLOPENTADIENYLMANGANESE TRICARBONYL is highly toxic by all routes of exposure. Approximately 5-15 ml, when spilled on the hand and wrist of a worker, produced toxic effects within 3-5 minutes.
    Fire Hazard When heated to decomposition, METHYLCYCLOPENTADIENYLMANGANESE TRICARBONYL emits toxic fumes of carbon monoxide. Hazardous polymerization may not occur.

    Potential Exposure MMT is used as an octane improver in unleaded gasoline, other distillate fuels, and fuel oils; as a smoke abater in fuels.
    First aid If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. Ifthis chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure,begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR if heart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medical facility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and induce vomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit.
