    Overview
    Because of the excellent properties of polydielectric compounds such as good chemical stability, adhesion, cohesion, water retention and film-forming properties (the formed film is easy to peel off) and non-toxic and harmless to the human body, methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer has been widely used in many fields such as medicine, agriculture and fine chemicals. Methyl vinyl ether/maleic acid alternating copolymer is a white loose powder solid at room temperature and pressure; soluble in water, acid and several organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran and butanone; density 0.329/cm3, relative density 1.37; softening point 200~225℃; PH (free acid, 5% aqueous solution). At present, the largest manufacturer of methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer in the world is International Specialty Products (ISP, International Specialty Products), formerly known as GAF. They have developed a series of MVE polymer products. The production of this series of products first consists of MVE and maleic acid copolymerization to form AN series products, and different molecular weight distributions are used for different purposes. Then AN reacts with water, alcohol or calcium/sodium ions to obtain S, ES, and MS series products. As people's requirements for environmental protection become higher and higher, the demand for methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymers will inevitably increase. A research paper uses a solution free radical copolymerization method to synthesize alternating copolymers of methyl vinyl ether (MVE) and maleic anhydride (MAN). The effects of factors such as solvent, polymerization temperature and reaction time on the yield of copolymer products and the intrinsic viscosity of the products are analyzed, the process conditions for synthesizing PMVMA are discussed, and the structure of the copolymer is characterized by FT-IR and 13C-NMR. The rate of change of the refractive index of methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer in tetrahydrofuran and water with the concentration of the solution is also determined, which provides a basis for selecting a suitable mobile phase when using gel chromatography (GPC) to determine the relative molecular mass of the copolymer.

AN form copolymers are insoluble in water and dispersed into a uniform slurry. In fact, under certain conditions, AN copolymers will hydrolyze rapidly when in contact with water and convert into a transparent solution in the free acid S form.
